I am, now, an avid believer in the power of vulnerability. I know! I know, people usually don’t see vulnerability as a strength. People typically view it a weakness, an insecurity, not something you would respect. I, too, used to think that way. I saw no purpose in willingly magnifying my flaws. Ironically, that exact thought is the complete opposite of what being vulnerable represents. There is so much power in vulnerability, but the first step is self-confidence. They go hand + hand but you cannot be comfortable with vulnerability without first being aware of your worth.
You must be comfortable with yourself in its entirety. I mean, everything about you must be embraced; from your crooked tooth down to your crusty pinky toe. Otherwise, you will not be confident enough to bare your soul and be free. You may be wondering how does baring your soul equate to freedom? If you’re 100% happy with you + who you are, accepting all flaws, no one can say anything to bring you down. It would kinda be like that moment in 8 Mile where Eminem makes fun of himself the whole time on stage in his rhymes. The opponent had nothing to say because he thought Eminem was going to spit some regular bars + his plan was to embarrass Eminem by exposing his imperfections. The tables turned when Em took the power from the beginning before his opponent had an opportunity to. That is what I mean when I talk about the great power vulnerability holds. Once you lay it out there, no one can snatch it from you.
As I previously mentioned, I used to view vulnerability as weakness. Yup! I was one of those people. Haha. Growing up, I was taught to leave your personal issues in the house. You watch your parents have a serious argument + someone gets smacked … you keep that between y’all. You came home to an eviction notice on the door … you don’t tell anyone but your parents. Money issues were the BIGGEST secret we kept. Our lips were sealed. Everything was a private “family” matter. It’s almost like my parents taught me how to fake perfection. Flaws and struggles were taboo to talk about outside the house. So on my journey to adulthood, I kept all my issues inside, just as I was raised to do. It wasn’t until 2012-2013 that I realized what God was doing. I realized that He gives us struggles not to embarrass or expose us, but to grow us up. Also, to share the story of how I overcame the trials to inspire someone that is currently going through it. I learned I should not be selfish with my experiences because God had me go through them to be compassionate + help someone in need. Ever since then, I haven’t stopped talking about my problems + struggles! HaHa. Someone is going to relate.
As you can see, being vulnerable is actually a superpower. Well, that is how I see it. Hopefully, after reading this, you feel the same way. Once you own all your imperfections + gain your self-confidence, you will be ready to unleash the power of vulnerability. Confidence first, then vulnerability. Always in that order, never to be used out of place. As I mentioned self-worth + confidence is the prerequisite to being vulnerable. If you watched my YouTube video on this topic, you saw me refer to vulnerability as a superpower. I totally mean that. Find your inner confidence to be free enough to release your powers. You won’t regret it, trust me. Until next time, love yourself, but love God first. Peace!
