Happy spring! You know what that means? Time for spring-cleaning! I found myself free on April 1st, so I decided to go ahead and start my cleaning. Typically, when I start my spring-cleaning, I don’t really find a rhyme or reason. Just pulling things at random to get rid of (and then getting distracted by such items and playing with them for the rest of the day). Then I head to Good Will with one measly bag.
This year, I decided to start with a game plan, and I’m happy I did! I ended up with three full trash bags for Goodwill, an organized closet, an organized kitchen, and a remodeled bathroom. I’m going to be honest, I wasn’t planning on the bathroom, but it happened! I’ve found that once I have my plan and I start getting productive, I don’t want to stop! There were only a handful of times that I got distracted by items buried in my apartement.
So, pick your day for spring-cleaning and start early! At 8 am sharp, with my coffee in hand, I got to work.
Bedroom:
I decided to start with the bedroom, because honestly, most of the items I need to go through are in my closet. Deciding to be extra, I pulled out every single clothing item I own out of the closet. Placing all the clothes on my bed, I went through each one. I gave myself a new rule, if I had not worn it in the last 6-12 months, it had to go. I had a few exceptions (dresses for special occasions, heavy jackets for trips and so forth). The toughest part for me was getting rid of the “when I lose 10 pounds” outfits I’d bought in the past. In 2022, we are not buying the body we want, but the body we have. Because let’s be honest, the body we have now is amazing!
Once I had gone through my clothing, I went to the task of organizing. I decided to organize my clothing by occasion! I made a section for going out, lazy day, casual, gym and more! I had a blast doing this because it helped me organize my clothing in a fun way! I ended up doing the same process with my shoes!
Kitchen:
I was not excited to tackle the kitchen, I mean, clothes are more fun? But, I put on my upbeat playlist and got to work. I decided to separate my tasks by food and cooking tools.
Similarly to my clothing, I pulled all of my food out of the cabinets, then proceeded to clean them inside and out. As I started to replace my dry food in the cabinets, I checked the expiration date on everything. I’m a little embarrassed to admit how much food I had to get rid of! I advise checking your cabinets more than once a year… Once all the expired food was gone, I organized by food type. For example, all of my rice and pasta were placed together. My baking ingredients even got their own section in the cabinets!
Next, I went through all my cooking tools. For me, there was not a lot to get rid of. However, my pots and pans were a mess! So I decided to reorganize my cabinets, so it would be easier to access all my tools!
Bathroom:
I had no intention of spring-cleaning this area, I mean it’s a bathroom? But then I opened my drawers, and realized they were jam packed with products I don’t or barely used. Similar to my clothing, I decided if I had not used the product in the last three months, I’d throw it away. I ended up with half a trash bag full of products! I felt so wasteful! I ended up sharing the products with my friends so they wouldn’t go to waste.
While I was going through my drawers, I found a bunch of decorations I bought when I initially moved in. I ended up finally getting to them and redecorating my bathroom! It was a great way to end my spring-cleaning!
Now, I live in a studio apartment, so my spring-cleaning was nothing crazy. For those of you with houses or a shopping habit (guilty is charged), this day might be a bit more intense. For whatever your situation is, I recommended creating a game plan! And give yourself time! If you have a big house, maybe set out two days for cleaning. Or split up the house and clean out through the week! Whatever will work best for your schedule. I wish you all a happy spring-cleaning!
