So often do we as women create New Year Resolutions that widely are associated with us losing weight, being more productive, doing this more, or that less, and shortly after the “New Year” hype is over, we return to “last year’s mindset” all because of one word: Motivation! We will decide not to deliver on our plans simply because we no longer feel “Motivated” or “Compelled” to keep pushing to see the results we say we desire. Sadly, this cycle continues year after year for many of us until we lose hope that we truly can accomplish what we set our minds to.
I can remember being in college about 9 years ago and wanting to “lose weight and create a healthier lifestyle”. A friend of mine at the time was a physical trainer and majored in physical education, so I figured this was a perfect time to get the results I had been seeking, only there was one problem. We met for one workout session and it was much more intense than I expected. It also included a call time far earlier than I planned to wake up without having to be at class or work. So the next workout session, I missed. I informed my friend I wouldn’t be able to make it, but did want to reschedule. I was in for a rude awakening when my friend confronted me about Lacking the Internal Motivation needed to accomplish my fitness goals. Further, the next requirement for our workout session to be rescheduled was that I would write an ESSAY paper detailing why it was important for me to reach my fitness goals. I was at the crossroads of what felt like an insane request, and me reaching my goals. I quickly determined I would skip out on what I felt was a ridiculous ESSAY and reach my fitness goals independently. In my mind, that was way too much and my friend was taking the role of physical trainer overboard.
Looking back, I now understand it wasn’t that my friend had taken MY goals too seriously, but that I HAD NOT! So often is it easy to rattle off a million and one goals we want to accomplish, but when was the last time you added the foundational purpose behind WHY you wanted to accomplish that particular goal? Was it simply you just thought it would be nice? Or does the goal align with your identity, purpose, and help to shape the vision for your life?
When it comes to slaying your goals, below are a few simple tips to help you keep things in perspective while ensuring you take daily action to see in reality what you envision in your mind!
1. Determine your Gifts, Strengths, and Values. This enables you to identify the areas you can leverage to accomplish your goals. This also ensures your behavior falls in line with your values so you never have to stress over even difficult decisions; they just become values that you live by.
2. Establish Clear Short Term (less than 1 year) and Long Term Goals that include the What, Why, and When. If you can’t define the why and when, you may need to revisit this goal making the cut.
3. Create an accountability mechanism for you to review your goals on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. Re-assess where a gap occurred, why, and determine if you need to adjust your goal or adjust your activity to align to that goal.
4. Learn when to exercise your right to say no to requests, activities, functions, or relationships that do not align with your values or goals. It is necessary to give yourself permission to freely say NO so that you protect your precious and valuable time and energy. If you dispense time and energy in unproductive and useless ways you will be robbed of the time and energy it will take to SLAY your goals!
5. Recalibrate as often as necessary until you reach your goals!
