How do you get inspired? It’s a question that many people ask themselves at the beginning of the new year. I want to share my advice on how to find inspiration, and also offer some tips for creating your own goals, so you can achieve them this year!
Inspiration can be found all around us, but sometimes it can be hard to find the inspiration for a specific goal. For example, one of my New Year resolutions is to write 10,000 words a month (I know, a large number). This word count can come from my blogging, work, and my creative writing. The main goal is to just force myself to write more. However, I’m struggling to find the inspiration to dedicate those words towards my creative writing.
It’s so easy to push it off, say I’ll write more next week. But as human nature works, I don’t get my word count in. So, in order to inspire myself to write more, I have placed aside my current works in progress. Instead, I’m going to focus on creating new content to get my creative juices flowing. To get inspired for new content, I’ve decided to step outside my comfort zone.
I’ve started doing my writing in busy cafés, parks, crowded tourist destinations, and more. In these new areas, I’ve started to observe my surroundings and the people occupying them. These simple observations have given me the ideas for new short stories and poems, and I can’t stop creating.
That is how I found inspiration for one of my New Year’s resolutions. I thought I’d list some of the other ways I get inspired to complete my goals:
—Go for a walk (or run, cycle etc.)
—Read something inspiring. Sometimes it’s good to read about someone else who has achieved what you want to achieve!
—Watch motivational videos on YouTube or listen to songs that inspire you. I’m currently listening to “I can’t stop” by Flux Pavilion as I type this.
—Talk to friends and family about your goals, and get their support!
—Keep a journal of your progress (or struggles) so you can look back on it later and see how far you’ve come.
—Set simple, achievable goals as stepping stones to completing your main goal. This will help keep you motivated and inspired.
—Make a plan of how to complete each step, or task that needs to be completed in order for you to achieve your main goal. For example, if my main goal is to write 10,0 000 words this year (and I’ve been struggling with writing), then maybe breaking it down into smaller goals will help me get started again. My smaller goals may be writing 500 words a day, or writing for an hour each day.
—Create a vision board with images and quotes that inspire you to achieve your goal. Place it somewhere where you will see it every day!
—Reward yourself after completing certain milestones on the way to achieving your goal. This can be something as simple as taking yourself out for a coffee, or buying that new book you’ve been wanting.
—Set deadlines for yourself and find someone who will hold you accountable. This could be a friend, family member, or even a coach/mentor!
—Last but not least, don’t give up on your goal if you have a setback. Keep going and persevere!

I get inspired both through circumstances and a desire to continue transforming myself. A perfect example is my journey into Web Development; I taught myself to program computers, in order to live a better life. I was inspired to do this because of my environment and a personal desire to succeed.
Thank you for your insightful prompt. It was nice to reflect on what motivates me.
